Josephine Gillan started her acting career with a role on Game Of Thrones, and it was a role she knew well.

Because the actress was working as a prostitute when she got cast in the HBO fantasy series as Marei and it allowed her to stop selling her body.

‘Game Of Thrones saved me from a life of prostitution, and has made me a much stronger person,’ she told the Mail on Sunday. ‘I was working as a whore and at the same time making X-rated movies, using the name Sophie O’Brien, when I saw an advert on a website for actresses in the film industry.

‘They were looking for young women with natural breasts and no tattoos, who didn’t mind being filmed naked. So I immediately sent in a picture.

‘They wrote back that they wanted me and I was thrilled because it was an amazing opportunity to do some proper acting. But I had no idea how much it would change my life,’ she said.

Gillan made her first appearance in season two as a newbie prostitute, and later appeared in three, four and five, with another appearance in season six, starting with episode 7.

The actress has also confirmed she will be appearing in season 7, making her characters one of the longest serving in the show.

See Marei back in King’s Landing in the latest episode of Game Of Thrones on Sky Atlantic, Monday, at 2am and 9pm.
